Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is a very popular square in London, located in the middle of Westminster. It is in this place that the main streets of Great Britain originate. Traditionally, various rallies and demonstrations are held here.
The founding date of the famous square is 1820. This place used to be called Charing Cross. There was a cross here, erected in honor of Edward I's wife.
When the royal stables were demolished in the area where Trafalgar Square is now located, one of the local architects made a proposal to build this landmark. The original name of the square was in the name of William IV, but later, the name was given in honor of a very significant event for the whole country – the victory in the Battle of Trafalgar.
Here, in Trafalgar Square, stands the Nelson Monument, in honor of the brave Admiral Nelson, who was killed during the war. This significant Nelson's column is a famous symbol of the whole of London. It has the appearance of a large monument of 44 meters, where a 5-meter sculpture of the hero admiral stands. The base and top of the sculpture are made of bronze. Fountains are located on different sides of the famous monument, as well as wonderful petrified lions.
There are also four pedestals, three of which are occupied by beautiful monuments to George IV, Charles Napier, and Henry Havelock. The latter will not find its faithful master in any way, since periodically, here one talented figure replaces the other.
Besides the fact that this square is the beginning of the most important streets, there is an excellent transport interchange here, and as expected, it is always loaded with transport.
The real living decoration of Trafalgar Square were pigeons, of which there were simply thousands, but in 2000 they banned the sale of bird feed, and later imposed penalties for those who feed pigeons. As a result, the hungry birds left the territory.
Trafalgar Square is always very crowded and festive. Various events are often held here. Every year, on New Year's Eve, the UK's most important Christmas tree lights up here.
London visitors who find themselves in Trafalgar Square have the opportunity to visit London's largest National Gallery, which is located next door. It also houses the largest collection of books in this country. Famous streets that start from Trafalgar Square lead to very significant attractions in the UK.
