Ek-Balam
Ek Balam is a former city of the Maya civilization, one of the most powerful in the history of mankind. It is located in the State of Yucatan, 30 kilometers north of the city of Valladolid. The homeland of the Maya is Latin America, Mexico was the center where famous Maya centers and temples were located. People from different countries continue to show interest in the Maya, and thousands of tourists visit Ek Balam every year.
The story of Ek-Balam
Ruins remain of that old and great city at the moment. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC, it existed here until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, who decided to burn down half of the buildings and expel the local population to remote areas, to take many people into their slavery. The area of the city is 12 square kilometers.
Ek Balam was surrounded by walls, which repeatedly saved the city from various invaders. Inside the city there was a whole complex of buildings, among which the acropolis can be distinguished. The Acropolis was the largest building in the city and a place of attraction for many residents. In addition, the ruins of an Oval Palace, where local rulers lived, as well as pyramid temples, where the Maya made sacrifices, were found. A ball field can be distinguished from the entertainment buildings.
Features of Ek-Balam
According to scientists, the city was quite large and developed. Basically, trade flourished here. Mayan fighters were also trained in the city of Ek Balam, as evidenced by numerous studies conducted by local archaeologists who found household items, tools and other things of the people here.
Ek Balam is one of the many Maya cities spread throughout Mexico. The city is distinguished by the fact that it was one of the largest settlements, and the ruins of most buildings have been preserved here, thanks to which we can reproduce the picture of the life of this ancient people.
