Ek-Balam
Ek-Balam is a former city of the Mayan civilization, one of the most powerful in the history of mankind. It is located in the State of Yucatan, 30 kilometers north of the city of Valladolid. The Mayan homeland is Latin America, Mexico was the center where famous Mayan centers and temples were located. People from different countries continue to show interest in the Maya; Ek Balam is visited by thousands of tourists every year.
The History of Ek-Balam
All that remains of that old and great city are now ruins. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC; it existed here until the Spanish conquerors arrived in these parts, who decided to burn half of the buildings and drive the local population to distant lands, taking many people into slavery. The area of the city is 12 square kilometers.
Ek-Balam was surrounded by walls, which repeatedly saved the city from various invaders. Inside the city there was a whole complex of buildings, among which the acropolis can be distinguished. The Acropolis was the largest building in the city and a place of attraction for many residents. In addition, the ruins of the Oval Palace were found, where local rulers lived, as well as pyramids - temples where the Mayans made sacrifices. Entertainment buildings include a ball field.
Features of Ek-Balam
According to scientists, the city was quite large and developed. Trade flourished here mainly. Also in the city of Ek-Balam, Mayan fighters were trained, this is evidenced by numerous studies conducted by local archaeologists who found household items, tools and other things of the people here.
Ek-Balam is one of the many Mayan cities spread throughout Mexico. The city is distinguished by the fact that it was one of the largest settlements, and the ruins of most of the buildings have been preserved here, thanks to which we can reproduce a picture of the life of this ancient people.
