The African American Museum in Philadelphia is considered to be the first institution that the city built and funded in order to preserve the rich African American social and cultural heritage. There are more than 750,000 exhibits stored here.
History of creation
In 1976, as part of the celebration of the bicentennial of the country's Declaration of Independence, the African American Museum was opened in Philadelphia. Previously, the landmark was known as the African-American Historical and Cultural Museum, it has had its current name since 1997. 10 years later, the African American Museum in Philadelphia received a grant from the city to renovate the building and improve the exhibits. In 2009, the institution closed for 3 months and opened with a new main exhibition installation that describes the early history of African Americans in Philadelphia, starting in 1776.

The mission of the African American Museum in Philadelphia is to preserve, interpret, and present the heritage of the African American people. It hosts exhibitions describing the period of slavery, the freedom and civil rights movements, and the contribution of artists and thinkers to the development of the country. Events are also organized in this place, including seminars, festivals, workshops, film screenings dedicated to both the history and culture of African Americans, and educational programs.

The Afro-American Museum in Philadelphia has 4 galleries and an auditorium, which hosts exhibitions on the African diaspora, the history of the city in Pennsylvania, and modern storytelling. The coverage of more than 100 years of history is underway, the most interesting moments from the life of the people are captured, images and documents from the archives are in chronological order. 10 full-size video projections depicting African-American pioneers contain answers to questions about life and the difficult path to equality.
Visitors have the opportunity to get acquainted with religion, culture, everyday life, creativity, learn traditions, look at artifacts, listen to lectures and watch films that broaden their horizons. The museum organizes performances by African-American singers, writers, and politicians. Museum guests can personally ask them questions and chat on various topics.
How to get
The African American Museum in Philadelphia is located in the historic district of the city on Arch Street. It's not far from the Liberty Bell. Bus No48 passes by the museum, and you can also take the subway here, the nearest station is Chinatown. Exhibitions are held from Thursday to Saturday from 10.00 to 17.00, on Sundays from 12:00-17:00. Please note that the schedule may change. It is recommended that you check your work schedule while planning your trip. Children aged 4-12 years get a discount when buying tickets.
