Exhibition of National Economic Achievements
In 1934, the Moscow government decided to create an agricultural exhibition dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the USSR. This idea was proposed in Moscow at a gathering of rural workers. The participants of the meeting supported the initiative, according to the decree of the administration, the exhibition had to be opened in August 1937. After confirming the decision, the Moscow City Council and the People's Commissariat began searching for a place for a future exhibition, and many options were considered. We unanimously came to one site, the Timiryazevskaya Agricultural Academy. The government and the architects supported the choice.
Short description
There was a swampy plot of land next to the academy, and it will help to show the work of agriculture in various conditions. A special program of architects provided a list of exhibition objects. The objects were divided into two parts. The first part consisted of five buildings: the Palace of Science, a site for technology demonstration, an agricultural chemicalization facility, and an electrification facility. The second group included exhibition facilities. During the construction, there was one condition that there was a consistent unity of buildings in the same style and a convenient location. Upon detailed consideration of the plan of the Exhibition of achievements of the National Economy, the construction participants saw that the place for the future exhibition was not very suitable for what they had planned. The search for a new site for the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy for construction has begun. The site was found near Yaroslavskoye highway, this site was suitable in all respects.
Features of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy
Construction of the site and buildings began in the summer of 1936, and after five months of work, the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy was 65 percent ready. But there were difficulties in upgrading, sites and buildings were also added during construction, and construction deadlines were postponed. They had to be postponed again until August 1938. However, due to the large volume of work, this deadline was postponed. The exhibition made an impression on all visitors, it was more like an entire city rather than an exhibition site. The occupied area was 136 hectares. There were an incredibly large number of buildings, huge beautiful parks, exhibition grounds with equipment and ponds with flowering plants. In the first year of its operation, the exhibition center hosted more than 5 million people. Even ignoring the delays in construction, many architects who participated in the construction of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy received government awards.
