Vajdahunyad Castle
The charming and romantic castle of Vajdahunyad is located at the crossroads of the central streets of Budapest. The reason for its construction was the great celebration of the millennium of Hungary, which took place in 1896.
By this day, « The historical pavilion » was organized here, where various exhibits from wood, cardboard and papier-mâché were presented, among which were copies of houses of reduced appearance. Among the presented layouts of the exhibition, Vaidakhunyad Castle was also flaunted.
Visitors were very struck by the castle of Vaidakhunyad, which stood out significantly among the exhibits of the pavilion. In his honor, they decided to name the entire exhibition hall, and at the end of this national holiday, it was decided to erect a copy of the castle in full size of stone.
By 1908, a beautiful stone castle towered at the temporary exhibition site, which was surrounded by a deep moat filled with water. Through the moat you can pass the bridge that leads through the gate in the Gothic style to the inside of the palace. Here, on the territory of the castle, there is a Romanesque monastery with a small chapel, as well as a Gothic-style building that resembles a citadel. On the local territory there is an Italian palazzo, as well as the tower of the Apostles.
The palace is presented in the Baroque style, and its walls are decorated with magnificent bas-reliefs. Among the many sculptures presented are images of King Matiash and Princess Aragon.
Near the castle there is a monument to an unknown writer who owns the work « Vengra Acts », written in the 12th century. Among travelers, the sculpture is very famous, all tourists without fail touch the pen of the figure, which makes it one of the most popular attractions in the country. There is a legend that says that touching the leader’s pen, the mind and wisdom are added to the person, and the students are excellent marks.
Today, within the walls of Vaidakhunyad Castle, there is a museum of agriculture, where the oldest expositions are presented, connected with this area. The exhibition tells the history of agricultural implements from its first days until our time. The palace also has meetings of the most important hunting trophies. On the castle you can taste the most popular Hungarian wines, which are prepared using an old recipe.
When it gets dark on the street, multi-colored lights light up in the circle of the castle, which give magic to the area. Often, various festivals and celebrations are held on the territory of Vaidakhunyad Castle, sometimes films are even shot here.
