Eger Lyceum

The Eger Lyceum is one of the most famous institutions in the area. Eger is home to a large number of different historical monuments, which are famous for their unsurpassed interiors and magnificent exterior views. The lyceum houses the Esterhazy College, where not only local residents receive knowledge, but people from different parts of Europe also study here.

History of the Lyceum in Eger

Initially, this building was intended to house a local university, but it never received university status. At different times, various educational institutions were located here: a law school, an episcopal printing house, as well as one of the most famous Jesuit schools in all of Hungary.

Thanks to the reconstruction of the Lyceum in Eger, it was possible to restore its original majestic appearance and add some new elements of Baroque architecture. The architecture of the castle itself is made in a rather austere style - the garden that adjoins the castle is especially surprising and delightful; inside this garden grow rare species of trees brought here from different parts of the world. The aesthetics of the walls and other elements of the castle’s defensive structures never cease to amaze. All elements were made in the same Baroque style, and they are organically combined with each other thanks to the work of the master engineers who built this structure.

Features of the Lyceum in Eger

Speaking about the modern castle, it should be said that it owes its appearance to Charles Albert, who, by order of the marquise, the owner of the castle, transferred it to the ownership of the Hungarian government, which decided to create educational institutions in this place. Thanks to the efforts of the government, a museum was opened in the Lyceum in Eger, where valuable items from the inhabitants of the castle are still kept, as well as the weapons that the defenders of the castle used to repel massive attacks of foreigners.

The Lyceum in Eger is one of the many educational institutions in Hungary, but also one of the few palaces with such a long history, the memory of which is preserved by the walls of this building.
