Lil Senado
Lil Senado is the central structure of Senado Square, located in Macau. The building is a historical example of the 16th century and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, like many buildings in Macau that belonged to the Portuguese during their colonization of the city. The territory has been owned by China for many years, and the locals are proud of the landmark.
History of origin
Before we talk about Lil Senado, we should say a few words about Senado Square. It is the most important historical site of Macau city. There are fountains, alleys and areas for pedestrians and tourists, the perimeter of the square is surrounded by historical monuments - buildings and museums, which are carefully guarded by the city authorities. On one side of the square is the Bureau of Civil and Urban Affairs, which used to be called the Senate, now the Lil Senado. And on the other side is the Mercy House, which is one of the most important buildings not only in Macau, but also in the whole of China. Also on the square there is a church, which was rebuilt by the Portuguese in the Baroque style, inside it there is an altar and a historical museum. The square is lined with magnificent 19th century European Gothic stones. However, the most important building of the square is the Lil Senado, which was built in 1784.
Architectural features of the building
There used to be pavilions on the site of the palace, which were made in a seasoned Chinese style. These pavilions served as a meeting place for diplomats and merchants. It was at one of these meetings that Portuguese diplomats were able to buy land from the Chinese and build a palace in the European Gothic style here. At the moment, the palace is the venue for a meeting of the Macau government, as well as the Bureau of Urban Relations, and guided tours are organized here.
The facade is designed in the Baroque style. Smooth white lines and beautiful arches lined with white stone are visible here. Entering the building, the visitor is greeted by halls where magnificent interior items are located. A curious hall of the palace is the library, which contains a collection of European works from the early 18th century, as well as a collection of works by local authors. There is also a beautiful courtyard inside the building with its well-kept shrubs, flower beds and plants. The Portuguese installed a bust of their compatriot Camoens inside the courtyard. According to Macau statistics, the Lil Senado is one of the most frequently photographed and visited buildings in the city. And the special beauty of the building is revealed at Christmas, when it is decorated with various festive elements and lights are turned on.
