Bouillon Castle
Bouillon Castle is known for its large size and long history. It is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Belgium. It is located in the Ardennes above the Belgian city of Bouillon, the famous Ardennes mountain system is known for passing through several European countries at once. The exact date of construction of the defensive structure is unknown, all that is known is that the first stone was laid here around the 11th century, and two centuries later it underwent significant changes, during which additional defensive structures adjacent to the castle were completed, as well as a fortified central gate. Bouillon Castle has been in the possession of various families and orders many times – Gottfried II, the House of Arden, Otbert of Liege, as well as the La Tour d'Auvergne family. But the fortress gained fame thanks to Duke Gottfried, who laid the foundation stone and received money to raise an army and go on a Crusade to liberate Jerusalem. After Bouillon Castle was owned by a large number of bishops, from whom the castle was liberated by the great King Louis the Fourth, in whose honor the famous Trappist church was built on the castle grounds.
