The name of the island means copper in Latin. Metal used to be mined in this place. There is also a version that Cyprus got its name due to the cypress tree. It is believed that this is the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. Cyprus is also one of the centers of Orthodoxy. There are more than 500 religious shrines here.
