Nijo Castle

The complex consists of buildings and gardens. Ninomaru Palace is recognized as the main building. It is more important than Hommaru Castle, which is also located on the territory of the attraction.

The history of Nijo Castle

The symbol of the shogunate began to be built in 1601. The corresponding order to create the complex was issued by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The construction work was completed in full only after 25 years. Tokugawa Iemitsu already ruled during this period. In 1788 and 1791, major fires occurred, and a significant part of the castle burned down, as it consisted of wooden structures.

After the fall of the shogunate, the complex became owned by the imperial family. Then he was officially called Nijo. In 1939, the complex was placed at the disposal of the city administration. A year later, it became available to visitors. This tradition has been preserved to this day. At the moment, the castle belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the National Treasures of Japan.

Interesting facts about Nijo Castle

Tokugawa Ieyasu was resting at Nijo Castle. Celebrations were held here when he came from Edo (today Tokyo) to Kyoto. The complex was still under construction, and he rarely visited Nijo Castle, but he always left a bright mark. During his visit, theatrical and musical performances were organized, and games were held.

To get to Ninomara, you need to go through the Kara-mon gate. Along the way, it is impossible not to notice the symbols of longevity. We are talking about carved cranes, bamboo, pine trees and plum blossoms. The roof is made of cypress. Due to the sharp angles, the gate looks majestic.

Ninomaru Palace consists of 6 cabinet-style buildings. Inside the buildings there are 33 rooms, almost 1,000 tatami mats and more than 3,500 murals by students of the Kano school. When entering the complex, it is necessary to take off your shoes. It is a sign of respect for Japanese culture.
