Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle is one of the most visited attractions in Japan. It was named after the road on which it is located. Most locals and tourists believe that there is a special atmosphere here. It is a symbol of the shogunate, the samurai government.

Nijo Castle, covering nearly 300,000 square meters, is the fortified residence of the Tokugawa shoguns in Kyoto. This city used to be the capital of Japan. The complex consists of buildings and gardens. Ninomaru Palace is recognized as the main building. It is of greater importance than Hommaru Castle, which is also located on the site.

History of Nijo Castle

The construction of the symbol of the shogunate began in 1601. The corresponding order to create the complex was issued by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Construction work was completed in full only after 25 years. During this period, Tokugawa Iemitsu was already ruling. In 1788 and 1791 there were major fires, and a significant part of the castle burned down, as it consisted of wooden structures.

After the fall of the shogunate, the complex became the property of the imperial family. Then he began to be officially called Nijo. In 1939, the complex was transferred to the disposal of the city administration. A year later, it became available to visitors. This tradition has survived to this day. The castle is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Treasure of Japan.

Interesting facts about Nijo Castle

Tokugawa Ieyasu rested in Nijo Castle. Celebrations were held here when he traveled from Edo (today Tokyo) to Kyoto. The complex was still under construction, he visited Nijo Castle infrequently, but always left a bright mark. During his visit, theatrical and musical performances were arranged, games were held.

To get to Ninomaru, you need to go through the Kara-mon Gate. Along the way, it is impossible not to notice the symbols of longevity. These are carved cranes, bamboo, pines and plum blossoms. The roof is made of cypress. Due to the sharp corners, the gates seem majestic.

Ninomaru's palace consists of 6 cabinet-style buildings. Inside the buildings there are 33 rooms, almost 1,000 tatami mats and more than 3,500 paintings by students of the Kano school. When entering the complex, you must take off your shoes. This is a sign of respect for Japanese culture.
