Bukit Lawang
Bukit Lawang settlement in the north of Sumatra, all conditions are created for tourists here: numerous hotels and gesthouseys, cafes and restaurants, as attractions here is the well-known center for the rehabilitation of orangutans, a cave with bats, a raging river Bohorok and a thicket of the jungle.
Bohorok Rehabilitation Center
The orangutang rehabilitation center arose in 1973, it was organized by two women Monica Borner and Regina Frey, they found monkey cubs in the jungle and taught them how to survive in the wild. After a while, the animals were released so that they could live fully. Often the orangutans returned to the center because they remembered the kindness and care that they received here. Over time, the center grew and began to attract the attention of tourists arriving in Bukit Lavang. You can come here and watch the big monkeys, many of which live here with whole families.
The orangutans of Sumatra Island are an endangered species, this happens largely due to the fault of poachers and illegal logging, which are home to them. The activities of the rehabilitation center help maintain the population. Tourists who come to see the monkeys provide all kinds of financial assistance that helps the center exist.
Bats Cave
There are caves near the village of Bukit Lavang. They live large groups of bats. For walking through the cave halls, it is best to find a guide, it will help you navigate and not get lost. It is important to have a flashlight with you to illuminate the path in dark corridors.
Bohorok River
The village is located on the banks of the Bohorok River, canopy bridges are thrown through it in some places, and local residents and tourists use them. One of the favorite entertainment of the local population is the descent along the river in inflatable circles — tubig. Both adults and children are happy to rake down the seething waters in the large rubber « plush ».
History of Bukit Lavang
The village of Bukit Lavang, known throughout Indonesia for the tragedy that occurred here in 2003. The flood began during the rainy season, the water level in the river was very high and many buildings on the shore were flooded. A poaching deforestation passed up the river, and huge logs created a kind of platinum, which at one point could not withstand the pressure of water. Streams quickly headed towards the village and entailed tree trunks, which caused great harm to the village. More than 200 people died and about 2,000 were injured during the flood, local homes and many infrastructure were destroyed.
Currently, the village of Bukit Lavang has been fully restored. Remembering the tragic event, many buildings were moved to highlands, away from the river.
