Charles bridge
Charles Bridge is the most important historical landmark of the Czech capital and the hallmark of Prague. The bridge, 520 meters long and 9.5 meters wide, connects the two sides of the city across the Vltava River. This bridge was named after Charles IV, by whose order it was built. The King laid the foundation stone himself in 1357. The construction of the bridge lasted more than fifty years.
The reliability and support of the bridge are based on 16 arches located below, and the main building material is sandstone.
Charles Bridge is decorated with thirty Baroque sculptures, with towers built on both sides. The Old Town Tower is considered the most beautiful building of the Middle Ages, located on the western side of the Charles Bridge. The severed heads of the leaders of the uprising hung here for more than ten years in the seventeenth century. On the other side are the Malostranskaya and Yuditina towers, connected by gates.
Against the background of Prague landscapes, you can see all the sculptures located on the bridge, as it has received the status of an open-air museum. The architecture of the buildings forms a connection between the Gothic style and the artistic style. The statues depict various saints and their intercessors, the most famous of which are St. Lutgard, St. Crucifixion and St. By Jan Nepomuksky. Each of the sculptures is shrouded in its own legend and history, closely related to the history of the city and the country. Due to the preservation of the sculptures from destruction, all the originals were replaced with copies and exhibited in the National Museum.
To date, the Charles Bridge is open only for walking. Young couples like to date on it, and kissing on it means that they will not break up.
Charles Bridge is the center of the universe and has a positive energy. It is believed that if you make a wish on this bridge, it will definitely come true. To do this, you need to hold onto the cross of Jan Nepomuksky, and then throw a coin over your shoulder. It is necessary not to forget to throw a coin into the river and in order to be sure to return.
During the day, it is a crowded place for walks and meetings, which is favored by artists, musicians, souvenir sellers, here they compete for the attention of numerous tourists strolling along the bridge.
