Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morn National Park covers part of Long Range, a mountain range stretching along the entire length of the west coast of Newfoundland Island. These mountains are the weathered remains of a ridge formed several million years ago, which makes them 20 times older than the Rocky massif in western Canada. The mountain range was formed as a result of a clash of continents and thirty ice ages over the past 3 million years. When approaching and retreating, the ice melted the peaks of the mountains, turning them into rounded peaks that we see now.

One of the most impressive attractions of Gros Morne Park is Lake Western Brook, 30 km long, with a fjord structure formed by the activities of the same glaciers that formed fjords in Norway. However, Western Brook was later cut off from the ocean and filled with pure fresh dark blue water flowing down from a mountain plateau over the lake. Pissing Mar Waterfall, the highest in eastern North America, falls into the lake from a height of 350 meters. You can enjoy the beauty of glacial fjords from the side of a pleasure boat that cuts the waves of Lake Western Brook. Western Brook Lake attracts tourists with its many hiking trails in the coastal zone, as well as the fact that it is located only half an hour from the main city in the Rocky Harbor region. The park visitors center operates year-round.

Gros Morne National Park

Part of the area is folded by ultra-basic rocks unsuitable for plant life due to the natural high content of heavy metals. Nevertheless, there is life in the Gros-Morn National Park. More than 36 different plant genera are presented here. Of the animals there are moose, deer-caribou, hares, partridges and other, including rare, species of animals.
