General information
The Groeninge Museum building was specially designed and built for the needs of an extensive art gallery. The main building was opened in 1930, and various extensions appeared in 1994. Here, large panoramic windows provide enough light. There are also windows in the roof of the building, which allows you to view the paintings in natural light. In total, the Groeninge Museum has 15 different rooms; benches for relaxation are installed for the convenience of guests. Most of the collection was formed by the local Academy of Arts. For all her students and almost all talented artists, there was a mandatory rule - to give part of their work to the Academy as a tribute. It could be one canvas or several.
Main features
The Groeninge Museum consists of several parts: the main building houses an extensive collection of paintings. The permanent exhibition invites visitors to get acquainted with the work of Frank Brangwyn, who was born and worked in Bruges, there are works by Van Eyck and Bosch’s “Last Judgment” (the painting has its own security; touching it is prohibited, as is approaching it at a distance unsafe for the canvas). Special attention in the Groeninge Museum is paid to numerous works by painters of the 15th and 16th centuries, they depict many biblical scenes. There are a large number of beautifully painted portraits.
Another part of the Groeninge Museum is dedicated to works closer to us in time from the 19th and 20th centuries. Here they are mixed according to styles, authors, and periods of appearance. In the third part of the museum, guests are invited to examine pieces of furniture, decor and paintings by different authors and periods of history. In one of the courtyards of the attraction there is a cultural composition “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”, its author ─ Rick Puth.
