Cathedral of Saint Bavo

Short description

Initially, instead of the Cathedral of St. Bavon, there was a small wooden church dedicated to St. John. It was reconstructed and given a Romanesque style. From the 14th to the 16th centuries, the church was repeatedly modified, so it was given a Gothic style. Two important rooms appeared in the temple, where the choir and the dispensary were located. At the end of the 16th century, the construction of the Cathedral of St. Bavon was fully completed, and the date 1569 is considered the end of this grandiose construction. The church belonged to the Abbey of St. Bavon for a long time, and later, after the uprising of the townspeople, the diocese of Ghent was founded, which is located here today.
