The history of the Tate Modern Gallery

The name of the landmark comes from Sir Henry Tate, an English sugar merchant known for creating the Tate Modern Gallery in London. The name is also used to refer to the legal entity established by the Museums and Galleries Act of 1992 as the "Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery."

The museum was opened in 2000, and since then the number of visitors has been increasing every year. In the first years after its opening, the gallery witnessed a tourist chaos that attracted 5.25 million people. The art collection at the Tate Modern Gallery includes masterpieces of new British art. From Picasso's "Three Dancers" to Dali's "Autumn Cannibalism", Rothko's "Frescoes of Sigrams", Duchamp's "Fontana" and Parreno's "Ever" - all this is available here under one roof. Masterpieces are worthy of admiration of any connoisseur and enthusiast of art.

The theme of the Tate Modern Gallery

It has 5 levels, but the most interesting and inspiring part is the first level, known as the Turbine Hall. The old power plant used to house generators. Now it houses very large works of art, which have become the center of attraction of the gallery. The uniqueness of the Tate Modern Gallery among all the galleries in the world lies in the fact that the works are arranged by subject, not chronologically. The works of the 1990s are divided into 4 themes, including:

  • "Nature-Substance-Circumstance";
  • Nude Activity-Flesh;
  • Picture-Object-Reality;
  • History-Memory-Society.

The Tate Modern Gallery houses one of the best art bookstores in London. It can be found inside the Engine Room on the first level. The bookstore presents the best catalogs of past exhibitions, as well as a large assortment of illustrated children's books on fine art.
