Grand Teton National Park lies in northwestern Wyoming, USA, close to Yellowstone National Park. Its defining feature is the Teton Range, a dramatic chain of sharp peaks rising abruptly above the Jackson Hole valley. Mountain scenery, clear lakes, forests, rivers, and abundant wildlife make the park one of the most spectacular natural destinations in the American West.
Mountains and landscapes
The Teton Range dominates the park. It formed through tectonic movement along an active fault, and its highest summit, Grand Teton, reaches approximately 4,199 metres. Forests cover the lower slopes, while glaciers, alpine meadows, and rugged canyons occupy higher elevations. Some rocks in the range are about 2.7 billion years old, although the mountains themselves rose much more recently.
Ancient glaciers played a major role in shaping the present landscape. They carved deep valleys, deposited moraines, and created basins that now hold mountain lakes. The result is a striking combination of steep rock walls, dramatic changes in elevation, and broad valleys.
Lakes and the Snake River
Several lakes lie at the foot of the mountains, reflecting the snow-covered peaks on calm days. Jenny Lake is among the best-known destinations for walks, photography, and the start of hiking trails. Jackson Lake, farther north, is larger and offers mountain views, boating, and lakeside recreation.
The Snake River winds through Jackson Hole. Its channels, floodplains, and riverside forests provide important habitat for birds and mammals. In suitable locations, visitors can photograph the mountains rising above open meadows and quiet stretches of water.
Wildlife
Grand Teton forms part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of North America's largest remaining temperate natural landscapes. Wildlife includes grizzly and black bears, wolves, bison, moose, elk, coyotes, and pronghorn. Marmots and other cold-adapted animals inhabit the mountains, while ospreys, eagles, and waterbirds can be seen around rivers and lakes.
Animals move freely across the wider ecosystem, so sightings are never guaranteed. Visitors should observe wildlife from a safe distance and follow park guidance, especially in areas where bears and moose are present.
History of the park
The Jackson Hole valley and the Teton Mountains have a long history of human use. Indigenous peoples travelled through and lived in the region long before European exploration. During the nineteenth century, fur trappers, traders, and settlers arrived in the valley.
Grand Teton National Park was established on February 26, 1929, to protect the mountain range and nearby lakes. Jackson Hole National Monument was created in 1943, and its lands were combined with the original park in 1950 to form the modern protected area. Philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. played an important role in preserving land in the region.
Things to see and do
Scenic drives and viewpoints provide an accessible introduction to the park and its mountain skyline. Popular activities include walking near Jenny Lake, visiting Jackson Lake, and hiking into mountain canyons. Experienced hikers can take longer routes to alpine lakes and high passes.
During the warmer months, visitors enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, nature photography, fishing, and boating. Autumn brings golden colours to the valley, while winter covers the landscape in snow and offers selected cold-weather activities. Check road conditions, trail access, and current restrictions before travelling.
When to visit
Summer is generally best for hiking and water activities, but it is also the busiest season. Spring and autumn can be quieter, although snow and seasonal conditions may close some roads and trails. Winters are cold, and access to certain areas is limited.
Grand Teton National Park is known for its combination of rugged peaks, glacial lakes, and diverse wildlife. It offers a memorable introduction to the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and one of the United States' most important natural ecosystems.
