White rock
The White Rock is a magnificent monument of nature, located in Crimea on an area of 30 hectares. The mountain is a steep wall 325 meters high.
The white rock arose under the influence of water and wind, which easily destroy limestone and sandstone. Layers of sedimentary rocks are clearly visible and the rock is a bit like Napoleon's cake over 70 million years old. In the layers of limestone you can find well-preserved fossils of shells, shellfish, ancient bone and cartilage inhabitants of the sea. As a result, erosion of the upper part of Ak-Kaya nature created caves, pillars and numerous grottoes, and erosion hollows, wasps, blocks accumulate at the foot of the mountain.
Interesting facts
The mountain is very interesting for archaeologists and historians, because in the 1960s the expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR unearthed about 20 parking lots of primitive people. During the excavations, a huge number of tips from silicon, knives, many bones of ancient animals were discovered: primitive bull, cave bears, mammoths, saigas, giant deer. The mountain was quite favorable for primitive people to live, this was facilitated by numerous grottoes, and the cliff allowed to drive wild animals that, not finding a way, were thrown down. In the caves of the foot of the rock, Scythians, sarmats, who left behind inscriptions, lived earlier. According to scientists, for sarmatians, the mountain was a sanctuary. Also, many Scythian graves were found in the district. And in the Middle Ages, a collection of murzas was gathering on the White Rock, which was not arranged by the policy of the Crimean Khan. The White Mountain was sometimes the place of execution. During the uprising of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, prisoners were thrown off her so that the hetman would rather pay a ransom for them.
Some caves are hard to reach, perhaps that is why many legends have arisen. According to one of them, a werewolf-snakes lived in the Altyn-Teshik cave, who stole the most beautiful girls and carried them to the cave. According to another legend, in the cave, the bandits hid the treasure chest, hence its name "golden hole".
The white rock is beautiful at any time, but in spring, thousands of flowers bloom on the slopes of the mountains, laying the whole valley with a unique aroma and color. Getting to the sights will not be difficult, because it is located 5 kilometers from the city of Belogorsk.
