Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate is a triumphal structure located in the center of Berlin. This is the only city gate that has been preserved since the 18th century. For many years, they have been considered one of the key attractions of the German capital. It is safe to say that this is the national symbol of the country.
Historical significance
The landmark is also called the Gate of Peace. They were built as a reminder of peace after the establishment of the union of Prussia, the Netherlands and Great Britain. Before the Iron Curtain and the destruction of the Berlin Wall, the gates divided the border between east and west Berlin, which is why they are called a sign of overcoming the separation of Germany and Europe.
Architectural features
The Brandenburg Gate was ordered to be built by the German King Friedrich Wilhelm II, who ruled Prussia. The construction work was led by Karl Gotthard Langhans in 1788, and lasted until 1791. The structure was built of sandstone bonded stone. The architect was inspired by the Athenian Acropolis and used this example as a basis during the creation of the Arc de Triomphe. A little later, a statue of an ancient Greek goddess appeared on the gate, proudly riding on a chariot of 4 bronze horses. Napoleon Bonaparte liked this statue, and he took it with him to France as a trophy. But then this structure was triumphantly returned to its place. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built in Germany, blocking the passage through the gate. In 1989, the Brandenburg Gate was reopened. In the northern wing of the landmark there is a Hall of Silence, where Germans and tourists commemorate the victims of this era.
