Selous

Selous Hunting Reserve is the largest protected area that belongs to Tanzania. This reserve occupies 5 percent of the entire territory of the country and is located on its southeastern side.

The Selous Reserve was established in 1905 and named after Courtney Selous, who was a famous zoologist and botanist. He devoted many years of his life to this reserve, studying it and making no small efforts to preserve the local nature.

This delightful Selous hunting reserve accommodates rivers, rocky formations, deciduous forests and magnificent meadows on its territory. More than half of the elephants from all over the country live in the park. Many other animals are doing well in the reserve, including buffaloes, zebras, rhinos, lions and many other representatives of the African wildlife. In total, there are at least two hundred varieties of various animal species in the Selous hunting reserve. There is also a wide variety of birds in Selous Park. With their bright colors, they attract a lot of attention from travelers, and the birds, like exhibits in a museum, are placed low on tree branches and pose for the cameras. The main attraction among the wildlife in the reserve are long-necked giraffes, which are more numerous here than anywhere else in Africa. Numerous swamps are filled with crocodiles, which can be seen during a water safari.

Fishing is allowed in the reserve, here you can not only safely ride a boat on the water, but also engage in exciting rafting, which is facilitated by mountain rivers.

The most suitable time to travel to Selous is from June to October. The air temperature at this time is kept at around 25 degrees Celsius and it does not rain.

For tourists in the park, there are special tents where you can spend the night, as well as take a shower. There are also cafes and restaurants in the tourist area, but, as a rule, the so-called buffet is offered here.
