The history of the Borghese Gallery

It is worth noting that Scipione became a cardinal at a fairly young age - he was 27 years old, which is an extremely unusual phenomenon of that time. His responsibilities included managing the art collection of the Vatican Museums. It was from then on that the cardinal began to feel a craving for art, which led to the creation of the famous gallery in 1660.

Borghese was a wealthy man, so he bought up ancient masterpieces not only throughout Italy, but also around the world - the gallery contains works by famous German, French, Italian, and Dutch artists. Taking advantage of his high position, the cardinal took paintings into his collection, which were kept in closed monasteries. The Borghese Gallery has more than 800 works of art.

Masterpieces of the Borghese Gallery

It is divided into halls, each of which has its own name. Every tourist is recommended to visit the following places of the gallery:

• The hall dedicated to Pauline Borghese Bonaparte. This hall attracts attention with its main work, "Pauline Borghese Bonaparte as Venus." The sculpture was made by the Italian master Antonio Canova.
• Daphne's room. Bernini's masterpiece "Apollo and Daphne" is kept here, as well as Angeletti's work dedicated to the same Daphne.
• Sala del Sole. This room is dedicated to Bernini's works, among which is his extremely famous sculpture "David", which was made personally for Cardinal Borghese.
• Sala degli imperatori. The ceiling of the hall was painted by Marchetti, and the central place was occupied by Giovanni's work "The Abduction of Proserpina". Sculptures of the "Twelve Caesars" also decorate the hall.
• Sala del Sieno. There is a whole collection of paintings by Caravaggio, and the central place is occupied by the work "Dancing Satyr".
