Oasis Siwa
Siwa is a large oasis located far from Cairo, almost on the border with Libya. Siwa Oasis is notable for the fact that it is the most colorful, lively and intense among all the oases of the vast Egyptian desert. This area is of interest to many tourists, because it is a real paradise among the sandy sea. Siwa has at least 300 thousand magnificent green palm trees and a large number of olive trees. The fortress of Shali, which is located among mud-brick huts, in the middle of a hill in the city of Siwa, attracts many travelers.
Since ancient times, the Siwa oasis has been inhabited by the so-called Berebers and Bedouins, who lead a mostly nomadic lifestyle. Representatives of these tribes are engaged in the cultivation of dates, as well as olives, and sometimes conduct guided tours of the area for travelers. Closer to the twentieth century, it was in this area that a strategic point was formed from Libya, which was hostile to Egypt. Thousands of people from the very center of the country, including ordinary workers, as well as military personnel, settled in this territory. At this time, sometime in 1980, the first civilized road from the city of Marsa Matruh was being built in Siwa.
More recently, in order to visit the colorful Siwu oasis, it was necessary to obtain a special permit, which was issued in Cairo. Now the procedure for visiting him has become easier, although in order to travel towards Libya, permission still needs to be presented.
There are attractions around the Siwa oasis that are also worth paying attention to. Just a few kilometers away, you can see the Temple of Amun, or rather its ruins, which date back to 525-630 BC. Here you can also see Jabl El-Mavta, which is a funerary ensemble of the powerful Roman era. The artesian spring of Juba Spring, where the local population likes to swim, also attracts visitors from natural attractions. The water temperature in this natural pool is always kept around 30 degrees Celsius. 15 km away. from the Siwa oasis there is a place where, according to many legends, the Macedonian himself is buried.
From the Siwa oasis, you can buy wonderful baskets of palm leaves, as well as unusual dresses and fabrics embroidered by local craftsmen, as souvenirs for your relatives. Amazing silverware is also very popular, which is characterized by a large size. For example, earrings made in Siva are so heavy that they are worn tied around the head with a leather cord.
