Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro
The decision to form a museum of modern art in Rio de Janeiro was made by a group of Brazilian large businessmen in 1948. The group was led by the famous collector R. De Castro Maya. The museum opened in 1951, and a year later it was temporarily moved to the Palace of G. Capanemas.
In 1952, city authorities allocated 40 thousand square meters. m for the construction of a new museum. He was erected near the Gulf of Guanabar in the northeast of Flamengo Park. Park, led by architect A. Reidie and landscape designer R. Marx was defeated in the territory of the former landfill. This explains the 20-meter columns, which serve as supports for a large-scale structure, going deep into the ground. Work on the arrangement of the park lasted 10 years ( 1950-1960 ). The administrative headquarters of the museum appeared in 1958. The first showroom in 1963 already received visitors.
The design of the museum building was completed by architect A. Reidie. Construction completed in 1955. A huge open area adorns the space in front of the entrance to the main building and the museum theater. On the north side there are special metal blinds. They help regulate the flow of sunlight in the gallery. Landscaping designed by R. Marx. It was he who created the Modernist Gardens – one of the unique features of the museum. The courtyard around has a large original spiral-shaped slope that rises to the upper tiers and the roof. It has an excellent observation deck with magnificent views of the picturesque bay and the famous Sugar Mountain. A cozy restaurant has also fit on the terrace.
The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro is also an art center, consists of exhibition halls, studio rooms for lectures, theater, storage and a number of secondary and office premises – dining room, administration rooms, workshops and others. The terrible fire of 1978 destroyed 90% of the museum's exhibits. Among them are the canvases of P. Picasso, S. Dali, J, Miro and other famous masters.
Currently, the museum of modern art exhibitions present works from their own collection, acquired by sponsors and patrons rented from the collection of the famous collector J. Chateaubriana. There are not many expositions, but they occupy all three floors. The museum has more than 10 thousand exhibits.
