Marajo
Marajo – is a huge island of Brazil, which occupies 48 thousand km2. Its main territory is located under various ranches where herders live, as well as hacienda. About 250 thousand people live on the island. Here is the city of Sore, which is considered its capital, because it houses a large number of different restaurants, shops, cafes, as well as other tourist activities.
Arriving on the island of Marajo, it is imperative to visit the hacienda in the jungle itself, where buffaloes live. Tourists are very interested, the so-called Poroku, when the Amazonian waves with Atlantic are hit. Such a sight looks best with the full moon from January to April. Do not miss the fascinating dances of the carimbo and lundu, which are performed at rural celebrations. Be sure to visit Praia Pesqueiro beach or Praia Araruna, where the waves reach the mark of the three meter level. Please note that it’s not worth it to take off your shoes in the city or villages, because there are insects, among which dangerous sand fleas that dig into the skin.
The area of the entire island is so large that it can be equalized to Switzerland in size. Marajo – this is the largest freshwater island on the entire planet. The Para River flows here, and there is also an influx of the Tokantins River, which impedes salt ocean waters, because one of the sides of the island is located near the Atlantic Ocean itself.
From the western part, the island overgrown with impenetrable jungle and dense forests. As for the Marajo coast, its landscapes are made with the help of mangroves, sandy shores, as well as wonderful palm trees.
The main population is located in the eastern part of the island. Here you can observe numerous wild buffaloes that carelessly roam even the streets of the city.
Traces of their stay on the island were left by the Indians who settled this territory for 3,000 years. Their magnificent clay products are presented at the Marajo Museum, which is located in the town of Kahoeira do Arari.
Marajo Island is also attracted by its many water flows. Tourists are happy to sail along the river in small boats, while considering funny parrots, huge storks, snow-white herds. The rivers are filled with many underwater inhabitants, including piranhas, pyrhicuses and other species of fish.
Visiting Marajo Island is best from June to December, as this time is considered drier. Local celebrations will definitely please tourists, including the Kvadrilas festival, the Agro Pekua-ria fair and many others.
